Revolutionary War Naval Midshipman's "Pressgang Tool"
c. 1770 Revolutionary War Era, Naval Midshipman's wooden "Pressgang Tool" with a "Peg Leg" shaped design, Used, Choice Very Fine.
This "Peg Leg" shaped Naval Midshipman's Pressgang Tool measures about 10.25" long with a 5" heavy wooden head. The lignum vitae wood surface has a nice patina and natural color with wear from age and actual use. (Lignum vitae is hard and durable, and is also the densest wood traded.) Pressgang tools were used for keeping Sailors in line and for Pressgang "recruitment" work on land, as well as being useful during a boarding attack and self defence on pay day at the docks.
18th century Naval wooden pressgang tool in original condition. The wood surface has a nice patina from age which can be seen in the photos. The surface has a few age splits and is still solid. Pressgang tools were used for keeping sailors in line and for pressgang recruitment work on land as well as being useful during a boarding attack and self defence on pay day at the docks. In total measuring 10.8 inches long and the solid shaped head measures 1.5 inches wide.
