Encased Postage #1 AERATED BREAD COMPANY Rarity
Key Merchant Type Our Third Example Over Four Decades
EP-1, HB-1, Scott-1, Reed AB01. One Cent, AERATED BREAD COMPANY, New York, with Traces of Original Silvering, Extremely Fine.
Rated as Rarity-7 (11 to 15 known) according to Fred Reed. Among the finest known of this Exceedingly rare absolute "Key" merchant type, not to mention being listed in all Encased Postage Stamp Catalogs as Number "1". The John J. Ford Jr. Collection, sold nearly two decades ago in 2004, contained a single One Cent Denomination graded Choice Very Fine that realized $4,250. EAHA auctioned two subsequent examples; First was June 2, 2012 Lot 265 graded VF/EF with two heavy hits damaging the mica and stamp which sold for $3,835; the second example was nicer, offered as April 25, 2014 Lot 1 graded AU but was "polished" which sold for $5,900. This current example is still finer overall in quality than either of those two prior. The reverse case appears Choice About Uncirculated with sharp distinct legends on smooth golden-chestnut natural surfaces that are enhanced by significant traces of Original Silvering within the lettering, greatly highlighting its eye appeal. Its mica is clear and unbroken showing only light circulation wear. The 1 blue Benjamin Franklin 1861 U.S. postage issue Stamp is well centered, just a bit towards the top left, mostly bright with a faint paper crease near the neck and has one tiny tone spot near the top of Franklin's head. This 1 is the only denomination available for the merchant to collectors as other than a unique 5, no other denominations were produced. The finest example we have offered to date, this One Cent represents the only "collectible" denomination of this important Merchant available to collectors. An important and exciting addition to any Civil War Encased Postage collection with a premium attractive appearance of some reverse Silvering. In aquiring this major merchant rarity the successful bidder will have the true claim to being the "Number One" new owner.
