Description
4 Embroidered And Applique Textile Hangings (Chakla), India, Early-Mid 20th c. Cotton, embroidery and applique. Such textiles were embroidered by brides as part of the trousseau. The square is auspicious and indicates it is a ceremonial cloth. They were used during the wedding ceremony to cover the dowry to be given to the bride. Ranging in size from: 2'0'' x 2'2'' (61 x 66 cm) to 2'7'' x 2'7'' (79 x 79 cm). Provenance: The Carol Summers Collection of Indian Folk Textiles.
