Passage Dated Saturday Nov. 7th 1863 Reads " Again we are in motion towards the enemy. We moved out at day light our Brigade leading left in front. Ordered not to light any extra large fires... a citizen outside our picket lines had been told by a staff officer yesterday that we were to match today... soon after noon reached the railroad I think near Rappahannock Station. Rebels are in plain sight." Passage Dated Sunday Nov. 8th 1863 "Just before sundown yesterday our Brigade received orders to forward in line of battle. After march to within sight of the Rebel fortifications we partook of something to eat and soon started again forward. The Sixth Maine were deployed as skirmishers. We supported them on the first line and were in turn supported by the 49th r 119th Pa. In the charge we took possession of the fort and the connecting rifle pits. The fire was very hot but we drove the enemy from his works. They fought stubbornly but the 2nd Brigade aiding our Brigade took 1200 [illegible] of artillery [and] eight or nine stand of [unreadable] with 1500 stand of arms the Col. was wounded in the hand. Major mortally wounded, Capts. Walker and Ord... killed and Lieuts Hutchinson And Farnell wounded. 7 enlisted men killed and 47 wounded. The Sixth [illegible] took 15 officers killed and wounded [and] about 90 men I understand. We slept on our arms near the fort. Soon After noon we crossed the river and marched to Brandy Station in line of battle. The country through here is the finest I evr saw in Virginia. We found Rebel winter quarters scattered around Brandy Station..." Monday Nov 9th Entry Includes Carter's Transcription Of Brig. General Russell's Congratulatory Address: "Officers and soldiers your valiant conduct of the 7th of Nov. will live in the annals of our country and will not be the least glorious of the exploits of the Army of the Potomac. But your General can not but express to you himself his congratulations..." Second Diary Mentions First Battle Of Bull Run, Reads "Sunday July 21, At 2 o'clock this morning we were awakened by our officers [and] started for Bull's Run, Men At 6'20' the signal gun was fired [and] it was a long time before they replied- it was near noon ere the battle reached its height, at that time the 69th N.Y. made a charge. Tremendous firing lasted the entire day. Our forces made them retreat several times, but they received reinforcement all day."
