A carved wooden shrine idol representing a Bateba Thil or Spirit. The figure has a thick encrusted surface from years of sacrificial offerings being poured onto the idol. The figure measures 8.75 inches tall on metal base. Lobi peoples, Burkina faso, West Africa. Provenance: The Thomas Wheelock collection, New York.

fair, heavily weathered and encrusted, the feet have been worn or eaten away. What remains is stable.
