Description
A carved wooden protective shrine idol known as bateba Thil Bambar, or literally Paralysed Bateba. Among the Lobi figures depicting a seated man or woman with their legs stretched out in front of them are called bamgbar/bambar. According to local tradition, such idolsprotect children and the elderly from paralysis. This sculpture measures 10.5 inches long x 9.75 inches tall on its custom display base. Lobi peoples, Burkina Faso, West Africa. Provenance: Ex Robert Banks collection, MD.
