Description
The auction featuring items from the Saul Brandman Foundation. Mask in polychrome carved wood fabrication, made by the Pende tribe.Region of origin: DemocraticRepublic of Congo, Africa. This mask is a Mbuya mask, which is associated with male circumcision rites. The mask has a raffia surround on the tongue-shaped beard, which has a two-tone geometric pattern. The head has an embroideredhelmet on the top with woven grass fibers. There is a carved unibrow above the eyes. The eyes and mouth are closed, and the nostrils of the nose are open. The mask itself measures eighteen inches tall by nine inches wide by twelve inches deep,and the ebony tone lacquered wooden stand measures two inches tall by eight inches wide by six inches deep. H:20in(50.8cm) W:6in(15.2cm)
