The auction featuring items from the Saul Brandman Foundation. Helmet mask in carved wood fabrication, made by the Mende tribe. Region of origin: Sierra Leone,Africa. This helmet mask is a Sande helmet mask, which is used during initiation activities celebrating young women transformed into adult status within the Sande female association. This helmet mask has leaf-like style carvings on thetop of the head. The eyes are open and down turned, and the nose is raised and narrow. The helmet mask itself measures fifteen inches tall by nine inches wide by eighteen inches deep, and the ebony tone metal stand measures nine inches tallby seven inches wide by seven inches deep. H:23.5in(59.6cm) W:9in(22.8cm)
