Eastern Pende peoples "Ngolo" Antelope mask. Ngolo masks featured in the seclusion rites of male circumcision (mukanda), the act of which was widely thought to guarantee male fertility. This mask has a well handled and worn surface patina, dry and obvious handling and wear suggesting field use. The mask measures 21 x 7 inches. Provenance: Noted collection of Bernd Muhlack, Kiel, Germany.
