Description
A Carved wooden mask with polychrome pigments and attached raffia grass and rattan fiber headdress. This mask may have represented a wise older man at boys’ initiations. One of the principal Kuba dance masks is known as "pwoom itok". The mask features traditional eyes, whose centers are cones surrounded by holes through which the wearer sees. The top of the headdress was probably originally adorned with feathers, like those worn by high-ranking persons. The mask itself measures 10.75 inches tall ( 18 inches tall on professional custom display stand) Provenance: The Dr Gilbert Jackson collection, MD.
