Japan - Toyokuni succession. Collection of 20 woodblock prints depicting Kabuki actors. 19th/20th century. Each on Japan. With stamp signatures and inscriptions. Partly mounted on backing. - Utagawa Toyokuni, often called Toyokuni I to distinguish him from the members of his school who took over his name after his death, was a great master of ukiyo-e and especially known for his prints of Kabuki actors. He was the second head of the famous Utagawa school. His name was first used after his death by his son-in-law Toyoshige, also known as Toyokuni II. Thereafter it was handed down and used by each head of the Utagawa school in turn. The artist Kunisada is known as Toyokuni III. - Partly browned and with marginal tears. Some leaves with holes and wormholes. Altogether well preserved.
Utagawa Toyokuni, oft als Toyokuni I. bezeichnet um ihn von den Mitgliedern seiner Schule zu unterscheiden, die nach seinem Tod seinen Namen übernahmen, war ein großer Meister des Ukiyo-e und vor allem für seine Drucke von Kabuki-Schauspielern bekannt. Er war das zweite Oberhaupt der berühmten Utagawa-Schule. Sein Name wurde nach seinem Tod zunächst von seinem Schwiegersohn Toyoshige verwendet, auch als Toyokuni II bekannt. Danach wurde es überliefert und nacheinander von jedem Oberhaupt der Utagawa-Schule verwendet. Der Künstler Kunisada ist als Toyokuni III bekannt. - Teils gebräunt und mit Randläsuren. Einige Blätter mit Löchern und Wurmfraß. Insgesamt wohl erhalten.
