HALF PLATE MEDALLION AMBROTYPE IN RARE WASHINGTON MONUMENT CASE

Description

THE AMBROTYPE. Half plate size (image is 5 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches). This arrangement with a central oval and surrounding ovals is referred to as 'medallion' motif. In this particular case there is one central oval and eight that surround it.

Wise decision to put the two women at 6:00. The man with the beard is balanced nicely at 12:00.

Facial tint to all images. Very good contrast. Nice symmetry.

THE CASE. Half plate. Black color. This is a rare case. It is case #4, 'The Washington Monument, Richmond, Virginia' in Union Cases, by Krainik, Krainik & Walvoord. This book describes it as RARE. It is case #1-3R, 'Washington Monument with Seraphs and Eagles,' in Nineteenth Century Photographic Cases and Wall Frames, by Paul Berg. This book describes it as VVR (VERY VERY RARE).

CONDITION OF AMBROTYPE: Very good to excellent. CONDITION OF CASE: The clasp does not work. Hinges are tight. The brass mat is especially shiny and attractive, and without blemishes.
