Concrétion de calcite botryoïde et stalactique italienne

The botryoidal to stalactitic columnar calcite occurs in cavities in travertine hosted in Pliocene (24,000 BP) sediments in abandoned quarry located a few hundred meters from the San Giovanni thermal baths at Rapolano Terme, Siena Province, Tuscany, Italy. The individual columns are grown parallel and perpendicular to the matrix, and actually represents the ceiling of the pockets in which they were formed. They average 3 to 4 centimeters wide and are up to 20 centimeters long.

This specimen is from a find made in the late 1990s (1998), which was written up in the Italian mineralogical magazine Rivista Mineralogica Italiana in 2019. This is an excellent representation of the larger specimens that came from this find. Measuring 18.5 x 21 x 18 cm. (2)
