James T. DuBois." Eight photo plates throughout. Maroon cloth-bound boards, with gilt titling on the front cover and black titling at the spine. Spine bearing a catalog sticker. Galusha Aaron Grow (1823-1907) was a politician, lawyer, writer and businessman, who served as the 24th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1861 to 1863. Elected as a Democrat in the 1850 congressional elections, he switched to the newly organized Republican Party in the mid-1850s when the Democratic Party tried to force the extension of slavery into western territories. Grow presided as Speaker of the House during the initial years of the American Civil War, and passed the landmark Homestead Act of 1862, which supported the Free Soil policy of Northerners who wanted individual farmers to own and operate their own farms, as opposed to Southern slave-owners who wanted to buy up large tracts of land and use slave labor.
