Amelia Earhart (1897-1938) was one of the world's most celebrated aviators and was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean (1932). In addition to her piloting feats, Earhart was known for encouraging women to reject constrictive social norms and to pursue various opportunities, especially in the field of aviation. Her aviation career was cut short though when she tragically disappeared in 1937 while attempting an unprecedented aerial circumnavigation of the globe.
George Palmer Putnam (1887 – 1950) was an American publisher, writer and explorer. Known for his marriage to (and being the widower of) Amelia Earhart, he had also achieved fame as one of the most successful promoters in the United States during the 1930s.
