Description

Two WWII Series E War Bond Posters Featuring FDR and Jefferson

Two War Bond posters, both measuring 26" x 14", Washington, D.C., dated 1945. A pair of large War Savings Bond posters, Series E. One bond, No. R 000 000 000E, is for $200 and features an engraved portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The second bond, No. L 000 000 000E, is for $50 and features an engraved portrait of Thomas Jefferson. Both are made out to the fictitious "Mr. and Mrs. America/Everywhere/U.S.A." With the printed signature of Secretary of the Treasury, Henry Morgenthau Jr. The U.S. Government Printing Office produced both. With flattened centerfolds and a few small separations to the Roosevelt poster. Both are very good.

US savings bonds helped finance World War II and, for decades after, provided risk-free investments for average Americans. Savings bonds were initially conceived to help encourage people to save during the Great Depression and to help pay for the U.S. government's borrowing needs. Series A to D bonds were sold from 1935-1941 and were promoted chiefly through the mail and limited magazine advertising. On May 1, 1941, the Series E bond was introduced, and with it the start of a national volunteer program. The volunteer program enlisted the nation's financial institutions, community leaders, volunteer committees, and advertising and communications media to promote the new bond. Series E became the most sustainable of all the series and the world's most widely held security. As the "Defense Bond" of 1941, and the "War Bond" of 1942-45, it was purchased by tens of millions of families. It was only eventually replaced by the Series EE bond in 1980.

Following Roosevelt's death on April 12, 1945, a special $200 Series E bond was made available at the beginning of the Eighth War Loan Drive, called the Victory Loan (October 29-December 8, 1945) to commemorate his memory and service to the nation.
