Julia Carolyn Child (1912-2004) was a beloved tv personality and cooking teacher, popular for bringing French cuisine to the American public in the 1960s. Child had joined the war effort through the OSS as a typist. She was originally stationed in Washington, D.C., but was later posted to Sri Lanka and China. After marrying Paul Cushing Child, the couple moved to Paris, and it was there that Julia was first introduced to French cuisine. In 1951 she graduated from the Cordon Bleu cooking school in Paris and published her first book Mastering the Art of French Cooking in 1961.
