Description

Superb Lot of 3 Civil War Era Tintypes

Included in this collection:

1) Sixth plate image of a well-coiffed young gentleman, possibly Confederate, seated with his hands on his lap, 2.5” x 3.25”, no place, circa 1861-65. Gilt coloring embellishes his jacket and rosy pink coloring touches his cheeks. Expected wear includes bending, some surface abrasions, and discoloration at bottom edge. Overall, a very attractive example.

2) Sixth plate head and shoulders image of a Union soldier with very distinctive light-colored eyes, 2.75” x 3.25”, no place, circa 1861-65. Housed in a lovely gutta percha case embossed with intricate scrollwork and clusters of grapes. Decorative burgundy velvet cover pad protects the glass cover of tintype. Minor discoloration to tintype, overall in near fine condition.

3) Quarter plate image of a Union soldier in uniform standing before a backdrop of a camp with tents and a flying American flag, 3.25” x 4.25”, no place, circa 1861-65. Very light touches of coloring. Tintype is covered with glass and framed to a size of 6" x 7". Wood and gilt colored frame is backed with paper and has an eyehook at top for hanging. Tintype is slightly dark, frame is lightly scratched with corner chipping. Not examined out of frame, but appears to be in very good plus condition.

The tintype was invented in the 1850s and was most popular during the Civil War due to its low cost and durability. During the photographic process, an emulsion was applied directly to a thin sheet of iron (not tin!) coated with a dark lacquer or enamel, which produced a unique positive image.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
