The Lee family has played an important role in American history from the early days of the colonial period through to the modern day. Beginning when Richard Lee I settled in Colonial Virginia in 1639 as a tobacco merchant, two of his descendants, Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee, would go on the sign the Declaration of Independence. Perhaps one of the most famous of his family, Robert E. Lee- as well as five of his direct relations- would serve the Confederate States of America during the Civil War.
