Irwin Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) was an American poet and writer. As a student at Columbia University in the 1940s, he began friendships with William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac, forming the core of the Beat Generation. Ginsberg's poetry and own personal actions vigorously oppose militarism, economic materialism, and sexual repression, and he's attended numerous political protests against everything from the Vietnam War to the War on Drugs. He's best known for his poem "Howl", in which he denounced capitalism and conformity in the United States and supported homosexuality. The poem attracted widespread publicity when it became the subject of an obscenity trial in 1957.
