"Fairy Tales and Legends of Many Nations" Selected, Newly Told, and Translated by C.B. Burkhardt, illustrated by James H. Cafferty and William Walcutt, published by Charles Scribner, New York, 1853; illustrated with woodcuts.
Hard boards, original embossed cloth, gold decorated front boards and spine, blind decorated backboard [wear, rounded corners, spine damages and repairs: see photos]; 5" x 7.1/4"; front endpaper is missing, pencil written 'Loois Alling 1882' on the first blank page and on the last blank page 'Leais Alling 1881', woodcut frontispiece and extra title page, xii + 277 pages + 13 woodcut plates [one plate is hand colored: see photo], the page edges are gilt, a little soiling, a few page corner folds, old slightly dump stain on the upper edge of the last 2 pages, the paper of the woodcut plates is yellowish, very good condition.
James H. Cafferty (1819-1869) was American portrait and landscape painter and book illustrator. He was prominent in New York City academic circles. In 1841, he was enrolled in the National Academy of Design. Since 1843, he participated in the Academy annual exhibition. Until the 1850s, most of his entries were landscapes, but during the last decade of his life, he focused on still life, many of them with fish and game subjects. From 1857 to 1858, he served on the National Academy Council.
William Walcutt (1819-1882) was an American painter and sculptor, best remembered for the Perry Monument in Cleveland, Ohio.
