Description
Gold presentation watch "Presented to the Chaplain. By the members of the House of Representatives. Boston, Mass, 1866. REV. N. M. GAYLORD" with eye engraved between 1866 and Reverend's name indicating Odd Fellows association. Watch measures 55mm with interior works stamped "Tremont Watch Company, Boston. No.1794". Noah M. Gaylord (1823-1873) enlisted and was commissioned a Chaplain in the 13th Massachusetts Infantry on July 16, 1861. He was discharged under special order on March 12, 1863. Gaylord was then commissioned a Chaplain in the United States Volunteers Hospital Chaplains on March 13, 1863. He served as Post-Chaplain, Campbell Hospital, Washington, DC in this capacity until being mustered out on July 1, 1865 in Washington DC. Following the war Gaylord was a politician in Massachusetts and a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Ohio. Watch is accompanied by 3-ring binder containing large amount of research related to Chaplain Noah Gaylord. Provenance: Gary Wolfer collection.
