OKAMOTO RYŌZAN FOR THE YASUDA COMPANY
A Large and Unusual Satsuma Vase
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century
The square-sided vase tapering to the foot and flaring out to the mouth, decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt, two side painted with shaped panels of people at daily activities in a Spring landscape, and beauties and children viewing maple leaves with Mount Fuji in the distance, the remaining two sides painted with faithful reproductions of prints from Hiroshige's series 53 Stations of the Tōkaido Road against a ground of floral scroll, the shoulder and neck painted with roundels of shishi (Chinese mythical lions) and phoenixes on scrolling vines and hollyhock leaves, or elongated flower petals of geometric and floral designs below floral lappets, the edges finished with key frets in gilt, signed on the underside Ryōzan zō, with the Yasuda Company mark and the mark of the Shimazu Family (now drilled)
