DESCRIPTION: A signed Arturo Toscanini, (Italian, 1867) autographed photo portrait with handwritten dedicatory. Dated May 1, 1925. Arturo Toscanini, (Italian, 1867) was an Italian conductor, considered one of the great virtuoso conductors of the first half of the 20th century. He came to prominence as a conductor in Italy and elsewhere, and was appointed musical director of La Scala, Milan, in 1898, and of the Metropolitan Opera, New York City, in 1908. He conducted the New York Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra from 1928 to 1936 and appeared with orchestras all over the world, except those of Italy and Germany during the Fascist regimes.
Toscanini conducted the world premieres of many operas, four of which have become part of the standard operatic repertoire: Pagliacci, La boheme, La fanciulla del West and Turandot. He also took an active role in Alfano's completion of Puccini's Turandot. He conducted the first Italian performances of Siegfried, Salome, Pelleas et Melisande, and Euryanthe, as well as the South American premieres of Tristan und Isolde and Madama Butterfly and the North American premieres of Boris Godunov and Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7. He also conducted the world premiere of Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings.
