1844 Illustrated Letter Supporting Henry Clay For President "Our Country Cause and Henry Clay Our Champion" Banner
June 16th, 1844-Dated, Henry Clay For President, Highly Illustrated Decorative Patriotic Content Letter, "Our Country Cause and Henry Clay Our Champion" Banner, With Integral Transmittal Cover, Very Fine.
The 1844 United States Presidential election was the 15th Presidential election, held from November 1 to December 4, 1844. Democrat James K. Polk defeated Whig candidate Henry Clay in a close contest, turning on the controversial issues of Slavery and the Annexation of the Republic of Texas. Written and illustrated in rich blue ink, this great content Political Letter measures about 7.75" x 9.5" folded into 4 page panels. Two panels support the Handwritten Letter, with the Postal address and remnants of its wax seal on reverse. Appearing as "Wings" at top as if a banner, with slogan written inside reading, "Our Country Cause and Henry Clay Our Champion". Unusual American Flags on stand on either side, which appear to have been hand-drawn with American flags shown flown upside down! This is authorized, and is a known "Signal of Distress" see: THE UNITED STATES FLAG CODE, Title 4, Chapter 1. Most of this excellent content Letter is a highly political charged discourse supporting Henry Clay. Written and illustrated in rich deep blue ink. Folds and some scattered minor spotting as expected for Postal letters of the time. Great Content!
