Item Details
Description
[MORMON – TRAVEL]. PAGE, John Edward (1799–1867). “Journal of a Tour chiefly into North Wales 1833” [An original manuscript with watercolor miniatures authored by a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles]. 47pp. (36pp. text, 9 pp. illustrations), including 18 (2 per page) original watercolor, pen and ink, illustrations of harbors, castles, ships and landscapes encountered on the journey. Original half sheep (spine panel perished, extremes a bit worn). Provenance: Mary Page (presentation gift inscription dated December 1863 from John Page: “The following journal was given to her by the author, her affectionate husband, John Page D.D.”). AUTHORED BY ONE OF THE EARLY LEADERS IN THE LATTER DAY SAINT MOVEMENT. John Page, born in Trenton, New York, became baptized into the Church of Christ on 18 August 1833 and ordained as an elder on 12 September 1833. Page would become a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in July 1838 and received his ordination to the office of apostle in Far West on 19 December 1838 from Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball. After the death of Joseph Smith in 1844, Page made a claim to the leadership of the church but was rejected by the majority of the LDC. He would later be excommunicated on 26 Junes 1846 after urging the LDC to follow James J. Strang as leader of the church and concluding that Joseph Smith was a fallen prophet.
