Tomas de Suria was part of the scientific expedition led by Alejandro Malaspina to the north Pacific coast in 1789-94. Henry Wagner described Suria's journal as "the only unofficial journal with one exception that I have ever seen of any of the Spanish voyages to the northwest coast and the frank expression of his opinions, which would not be tolerated in an official journal, adds intense interest to his account." An important source for this great voyage of exploration, including Nootka Sound and the California coast (Monterey). The present volume is a summary and retranslation from Suria's Diary, which had been translated into English by Wagner. It is illustrated with drawings by Suria of natives of the northwest coast region, maps, and reproductions of artistic works by Suria such as engravings, medals, and drawings. An appendix lists Suria's graphic works and engravings in chronological order. Hill 591.
