Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin John Nelson Battenberg was first influenced by the artist John Goray who came to Milwaukee from Chicago when Battenberg was only 10 years old. He later studded at the Ruskin School, Oxford University and received MFA degrees from Michigan State University and California School of Arts and Crafts. An accomplished sculptor and painter, Battenberg suffered a leg injury in 2007 which prevented him from sculpting for the rest of his days. This painting was finished the year following his injury.

Battenberg's art has been collected by the Honolulu Museum of Art; the Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois in Champaign; the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming; the Oakland Museum of California; the San Diego Museum of Art; the Seattle Art Museum; the Syracuse University Art Collection; the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, California; and Phoenix University in Phoenix, Arizona, among others.
