Description
Western Europe, France, Late Medieval period, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A remarkable hand-carved marble mortar with a flat base, a gradually widening conical body, four rounded integral handles or lugs equidistantly spaced around the perimeter, and a deep grinding cavity. The smooth body of this vessel displays mottled hues of cool gray and chalky white. A splendid and sizeable example from Medieval Europe! Size: 12" W x 5.375" H (30.5 cm x 13.7 cm)
