19th Century Staffordshire Transferware Platter. Ralph Stevenson & Son blue on white transfer pattern known as The Bull, floral rim centering a landscape with livestock and farmer to the foreground with river and house in the background. Mark to underside reads 'SEMI CHINA WARRANTED', impressed with '18'. {Approximate dimensions: 1 7/8 high x 18 5/8 wide x 14 3/8 inches deep.}. Parallels: As illustrated, Transferware Collector's Club Database, where the following is noted: The pattern is part of a series that features domestic animals in a rural English setting. It is illustrated in Coysh Henrywood1982, p. 328. More information about this pattern is given in CoyshHenrywood1989, p. 181, where it is stated that the pattern was copied with some minor differences from a painting titled "The Bull" by the 17th century Dutch artist Paulus Potter. Condition: Some crazing throughout. Some wear to underside includes staining and discoloration. The top with several light scratches.
