A signed engraving by well-known Southwestern artist, Henry Ziegler. The dry-point engraving, titled “Riding to the Ranch”, details a cowboy, hat in hand, galloping through the plains. The print is signed to the lower right and titled to the lower left.Henry Ziegler was born in Sherman, Texas in 1889. In his mid-teens, he went to work for the Lubin Film Co. making Western films playing a “cowboy”. By 1910 he was playing the cowboy in Buffalo Bill’s traveling Wild West Show in Richmond Virginia. Sometime in the early 1920s Ziegler went to New York and enrolled in the Art Students League where he met and became a student of Joseph Pennell. By the late 1920s – early 1930s Ziegler worked exclusively in drypoint documenting cowboy life in its natural environments. About 100 remarkable drypoints are known. The prints were sold briskly by prominent New York Galleries such as Knoedler, Kraushaar, and Associated American Artists. In 1927 he published a series of forty-nine etchings for the book “Cowboy Stuff”, in an edition of 12 with originals and 500 in reproduction. His prints were also exhibited at the art competition of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.Ziegler’s prints are in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, The National Portrait Gallery, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Georgetown University, among others.
