1833 Henry Clay ALS w/ Engraving

Autograph letter signed by Henry Clay (1777-1852), to Henry Shepherd. Washington, D.C., 13 December 1833. 1 page. Contemporary note at letter’s head of the letter reads: “Presented by A.A. A handsomely presented business-related ALS written by Henry Clay regarding the particulars of the acquisition of cattle. He writes to Mr. Shepherd, from whom he is purchasing the cattle, specifying his requests for them to be shoed and rings put in their noses, as well as for the employment and payment to a blacksmith, and a man to drive the cattle.

Henry Clay (1777-1852) was a prominent American statesman known for his influential role in 19th-century politics. He served as a lawyer, congressman, senator, and diplomat, leaving an indelible mark on the United States. As the "Great Compromiser," Clay skillfully navigated conflicts and promoted national unity. Advocating for the American System, he championed internal improvements and protective tariffs. Clay's significant contributions include the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which aimed to balance the interests of slave and free states. Despite unsuccessful presidential bids, his statesmanship and commitment to preserving the Union solidified his position as one of America's most respected political figures.
