A 19th century French silver-gilt chalice
Jean-Francois Burel, Paris circa 1819-1838, 1st standard and Paris guarantee mark
A tapering cylindrical bowl with flared rim, the bowl gilded to exterior and interior, the rest applied silver with wheatsheaves and chased medallions depicting scenes from the life of Christ, the triple-knopped stem with plantain leaf and plaited ropework rims, chased with similar medallions amongst scrolling strapwork, the domed spreading foot chased with six panels, four depicting symbols of the Passion of Christ the other two of grape, reed and wheat swags, the rim with further medallions featuring three rosettes and ribboned bulrushes, height 31cm, weight 20oz.
