Description
French silver chalice and paten by Gabriel Gallice, 1959, in modernistic style with fitted case. The chalice is triangular in cross section, with applied decorations on the sides illustrating the verse John 15:5, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.", and depicts a cluster of grapes, a vine, and a leaf; the chalice is supported by a polished knot of grapevine wood resting on a triangular base incised with a repeating triangular design. The paten is decorated on the underside with the Greek letters chi-rho (Christo), and stylized fish. Both the chalice and paten have gold washed interiors and are marked with maker's hallmark, name at bottom and French silver export mark. Includes a handwritten note with the details of the symbols on the chalice and paten. Another chalice by Gallice is currently in the parish church of Notre Dame De La Visitation in Matinique. Chalice appx 6"h x 4 3/4"dia, paten 6 1/4"dia, case 6 1/2"h x 7"w x 6 1/2"d. Very good condition, case lacks handle.
