Joan Eardley discovered the tiny fishing village of Catterline, south of Aberdeen, in 1951, and found much inspiration there, particularly towards the end of her career. She rarely strayed from its immediate vicinity to paint, unless returning to Glasgow, and she worked on the shore braced against the elements with her easel weighted down by stones. Some of the hardboards she worked on were vast, but this is on a more 'domestic' scale yet entirely characteristic of her remarkable series of seascapes. These works are executed in 'mixed media', often using boat paint along with oil, and incorporating objects and collage.

Overall framed dimensions 53.5 x 80 x 5.5cm.

The board is sound.
There is some surface dirt across the work.
To the lower-right corner there is a small flake of paint loss and another small flake of loss to the lower-centre of the left edge.
Tucked in the upper-right corner there is a small dent in the board.
Inspection under UV light reveals no clear evidence of retouching or restoration.
