Description

Gorgeous CDV Album of 37th Senate Under Lincoln, Previously Owned by Family of Senator Benjamin Stark 48 pages

An embossed leather CDV album featuring all but two members of the 37th senate (1861-1863) under president Abraham Lincoln, with most published by famed Civil War photographer Matthew Brady. 48pp, measuring 5.5" x 6", n.p., undated. Each page features a notation identifying the subject, starting with Oregon senator James Nesmith and ending with Benjamin Stark. The album cover is detached from the spine and the clasps have been removed but the album is still functional. Varying degrees of toning and foxing to mounts, with photographs in generally good condition. Please see the images for further information on condition and contents.

The 37th United States Congress met in Washington, D.C. during Lincoln's first two years as president, between March 4, 1861 and March 4, 1863. For the first time since the party's establishment, the Republicans won the majority of both chambers, and thus full control of Congress. Further, with Abraham Lincoln becoming the first Republican President, it marked the Republican party's first-ever overall federal government trifecta.
