Description
Edward Telfair Signed Land Grant for Service in "Defense of this State", 1791
1p, measuring 15.5" x 10", Augusta, Georgia, dated January 20, 1791. An appointment signed "Edwd Telfair" as Governor of Georgia, appointing Neil Dougherty "Second Lieutenant of the Seventh Company of the Columbia Militia; whereof William Few, esquire is Colonel formed for the Defense of this State, and for repelling every hostile Invasion thereof…" Countersigned "Jno. Milton, Secr." With a paper seal at the upper left corner. Docketing on verso. The document has flattened folds, with separations at some folds. Toning, foxing, and staining throughout. Large and bold signature.
Edward Telfair (1735-1807) was a Scottish-born American Founding Father and politician who served as governor of Georgia between 1786 and 1787 and again from 1790 through 1793. He was a member of the Continental Congress and one of the signers of the Articles of Confederation.
