Edward Otho Cresap Ord (1818-1883) was an American engineer and U.S. Army officer who fought in the Seminole War, the Indian Wars, and the American Civil War. He joined the Union Army as a Captain of Battery C, 3rd U.S. Army and was promoted one year later to the rank of major general. He served under Generals Grant and Rosecrans, and assumed command of the XIII Corps during the final days of the Siege of Vicksburg. Near the end of the war, Ord was instrumental in the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee by suggesting to Confederate General James Longstreet, during a prisoner exchange, that Lee's best course of action for peace would be to meet with Grant. Ord also led a forced march to Appomattox Court House to relieve General Sheridan and force Lee to surrender.
