This deed conveys ownership of the twenty-two-year-old enslaved man Stephen from C. Worsham to William R. Phillips of Macon, Georgia.

[SLAVERY.] C. Worsham, Manuscript Document Signed, Deed for a slave to William R. Phillips, February 7, 1860, Macon, Georgia. 1 p., 7.75" x 5.25". Expected folds; some minor staining; very good.

Know all men by these presents that I, C. Worsham do bargain sell and deliver to W R Phillips a certain negro man named Stephen age twenty two years old for the consideration of thirteen hundred and fifty Dollars to me in hand paid the right and title I do warrant and defend also warrant said negro sound and healthy both in body and mind

William Rabun Phillips (1822-1913) was born in Jones County, Georgia, and moved to Macon, Georgia, in the late 1830s. He married Morgiana E. Jones (1840-1915) in May 1859. In 1860, he was a planter in Macon, Georgia, where he owned $17,000 worth of real estate and $64,300 in personal estate, including five enslaved African Americans. From 1870 to 1910, he was a farmer in Bibb County, Georgia. In 1880, his brother Solomon L. Phillips lived with William R. Phillips and his wife.
