Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Vicus, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. An intriguing redware stirrup vessel in the form of a kneeling hermaphrodite with the air of contentedness. The rotund figure hunches forward, holding arms to their chest; their body displaying petite breasts, a recessed navel, and an erect phallus. The head juts forward presenting huge, almond-shaped eyes, a curved nose, a smiling mouth, and a pair of giant ears, each with a drill hole for suspending ornaments. A bulbous coiffure caps the head as the strap handle arches out from the verso connecting to the tubular spout that rises from the back. The bottoms of the figure's feet can be seen below the spout. Size: 5.5" W x 9.4" H (14 cm x 23.9 cm)
