Description
[REVOLUTIONARY WAR -- THE FRENCH REVOLUTION]. A sammelband of American editions of works by Edmund BURKE, Edmund MACKINTOSH, and scarce 1791 Baltimore printing of Thomas Paine's Rights of Man.

BURKE, Edmund (1729-1797). Reflections on the Revolution in France and on the Proceedings in Certain Societies in London. Philadelphia: D. Humphreys for Young, Dobson, Carey, and Rice, 1792. Second American Edition. Evans 24157. -- MACKINTOSH, James (1765-1832). Vindiciæ Gallicæ. Defence of the French Revolution and its English Admirers Against the Accusations of the Right Hon. Edmund Burke. Philadelphia: William Young, 1792. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Evans 24495. -- PAINE, Thomas (1737-1809). Rights of Man: Being an Answer to Mr. Burke's Attack on the French Revolution. Baltimore: David Graham, 1791. Evans 23659, Minick 34.

Together, 3 works in one volume, 8vo (122 x 203 mm). Near-contemporary calf, red morocco lettering-piece gilt (scuffing); 20th-century one-quarter navy morocco slipcase and chemise (spine sunned, some chipping).

Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France, an intellectual attack against the French Revolution, in which he argues that the Revolution will fail, due to its abstract foundation, drew several notable responses. In addition to the response of Mackintosh, bound here, Burke's work drew replies from Thomas Paine, who was infuriated and "chagrined by these statements coming from his former friend, the great liberal. He rushed into print with his even more celebrated answer." (Gimbel catalogue 59).
