[CIVIL WAR]. Encased postage, one cent stamp with advertisement for Ayer's Cathartic Pills.

Encased Postage, one cent stamp, "Take Ayer's Cathartic Pills," 25 mm dia. HB-3, EP-2, Scott-2, Reed-AC01SA, 80 case, 80 stamp, 80 mica =245. Rarity 3 (41-50 pieces exist).

In 1862, during the Civil War, as coinage was hoarded by a frightened public, there was a need to keep commerce moving. Designed and patented by John Gault, encased postage stamps met some of this need. The obverse displayed a postage stamp under a clear pane of mica and the reverse featured a merchant's advertisement.
