[INDIAN WARS]. U.S. Army Model 1881 spiked pith helmet. Manufactured by Shannon, Miller & Crane (active 1880-1892), New York.Â
Brim to crown 8 in. black wool felt over cork pith helmet, bound visor, looped brass ring chin scales backed with black velvet, 1 in. diam. hooked infantry buttons with crossed rifles, overall length 4 in. threaded spike, also with 2 1/2 in. diam. black felt-covered threaded cover, tan-cream lacquered leather sweatband, cream silk lining (minor warping at crown, minor scuffing to binding). Approx. 3 3/4 x 4 1/2 in. gilt brass Great Seal insignia with American eagle reading "E Pluribus Unum", 3/4 in. silver "9" on shield, possibly indicating 9th infantry, or 9th company. Printed and gilt leather manufacturer label affixed to interior crown: "Shannon, MIller & Crane / New-York."Â
4 5/8 x 3/4 in. typed paper label (heavy toning) attributes the helmet: "Officer's Dress Helmet / 1870-1890 / Worn by Capt. Geo. Lemon - Mass."
