Description
A Papua New Guinea ceremonial mask from the Iatmul people in Kandangai Village, Sepik River, Mid Sepik Province. Carved wooden mask with Black painted finish, featuring large protruding eyes with inset spiral carved shells, a similar smaller mask at the forehead framed by a clay border with inset Cowrie shells and Cassowary feathers. Intended to be attached to a Tumbuan dance costume for use in men's initiation ceremonies. Wear to finish, shrinkage cracks and minor damage to wood. 20" high. ESTIMATE $800-1,200 PROVENANCE: From the Solomon collection in Wolverine Lake, Michigan. Purchased in Kandangai Village in 1978, exhibited in "The Ritual Art of the Sepik River" (Plate IV) in April 1984 at the Trisolini Gallery of Ohio University.
