Description
Egypt, Romano-Egyptian Period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. A mold-formed pottery figure of Bes, the dwarf deity known as a protector of women, children, and the weak. Bes is shown here with bent legs flanking a lengthy phallus, a portly belly, arms slightly bent at the elbows, and hunched shoulders, all covered in dark gray and black pigment. His face peers forward with large, almond-shaped eyes and has a triangular nose, protruding cheekbones, furrowed brows, tab-shaped ears, and full lips centered on a full beard. A fragmentary feathered headdress tops his head. Size: 1.875" W x 3.625" H (4.8 cm x 9.2 cm); 5" H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Losses to top of feathered headdress and bottoms of both legs as shown. Abrasions and nicks, with light fading to dark pigment, and softening to some finer details. Nice preservation to overall figural form.
