Latin America, Mexico, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 19th century CE. A finely carved wooden Cristo (Crucified Christ) that captures the sorrow and bloodshed Christ endured before fulfilling his role on Earth, all adorned with lustrous gilding and vibrant pigments atop gesso. Surmounted by an "INRI" banner, Christ exhibits a look of pure exhaustion; closing his eyes and bowing his head. His body is gaunt with streaks of red blood running across his body from his nailed limbs, pierced chest, and thorny crown. This example was created when Mexico was referred to as New Spain and the Catholic Church's missionary work was expanding northward into the Southwest region of the United States. Note how the surface is darkened by soot stains indicating that this was likely part of a church or domestic altar with candle votives burning beneath. Size: 17.3" W x 30.2" H (43.9 cm x 76.7 cm)
