Description
Cook Islands
c. 1840
Wood, mother-of-pearl, and vegetal fibers
75 x 35 cm
Provenance:
Julian Harding (April 2010)
Property from a Princely collection
This kind of double sailing canoe "waka taurua" - intricately decorated and inlaid with mother of pearl - is typical for the Manihiki and Rakahanga atolls. The two canoes are of equal size, and a striking characteristic is the setting of the two bows in opposite directions to avoid bringing the canoe around in tacking.
Nowadays, canoe models such as the ones presented in this sale, are often the only remainders that allow us to study the history and discover the richness of the extraordinary seamen's craft of Polynesia's pre-contact habitants.
