Description
BINET (ESTIENNE)
Abregé des vies des principaux fondateurs des religions de l'eglise, representez dans le choeur de l'Abbaie de S. Lambert de Liesses en Haynaut, title printed in red and black, additional engraved pictorial title, 39 engraved portraits by Cornelius Galle after his brother Theodoor Galle, dark green morocco gilt by C. Smith (with stamp on front free endpaper), g.e., extremities rubbed, small 4to (215 x 155mm.), Antwerp, Hierosme Verdussen, 1678
Footnotes:
HANROTT-BECKFORD-HAMILTON COPY of a rare edition of Binet's Vies. No copies are listed on WorldCat, and only the Trinity College Dublin copy on Jisc Library Hub.

Provenance: P.A. Hanrott (1776-1856), bibliophile and 'collector of no mean learning... he was in the habit of inscribing in ink on the fly-leaves of his books interesting bibliographical remarks, nearly always terminating with a short horizontal dash...' (De Ricci, English Collectors of Books & Manuscripts (1530-1930), 1960, pp.100-101). Our copy has an ink note on the endpaper stating 'Rare. Very fine impressions of the portraits -', in this case the dash not ending with a 'hook'. Presumably this copy is the one listed in the Catalogue of... [the] Valuable Library of P.A. Hanrott, 16 July 1833, lot 618; William Beckford (1760-1844), pencil note ('Hanrott's copy at whose sale it was purchased by Mr. Beckford'); William Alexander, 11th Duke of Hamilton (1811-1863), pencil note recording 'Duke of Hamilton's Sale... 10/7/82...', which was the ninth day of The First Portion of the Beckford Library, Removed from Hamilton Palace. The catalogue description (lot 914, with 'fine impressions of the portraits...', naming C. Smith as the binder, but mistakenly describing the binding as blue not green morocco) is pasted in on front free endpaper; purchased at this sale by Nattali & Bond for £1.13.0; Charles Butler, his sale Sotheby's, 18 March 1912, lot 2180, printed catalogue description noting 'signature A.4 very slightly defective' pasted onto the front free endpaper.
