Translated into English as 'Like the Boys,' Comme des Garçons skyrocketed into international fame after its debut at Paris Fashion Week in 1981, but Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo has been honing her anti-fashion empire since the establishment of CDG in 1969. Taking inspiration from the rustic garbs of the Japanese peasant, Kawakubo focuses on non-commercial, seasonless, often androgynous design. Considered a leader of the avant-garde movement, Kawakubo's work plays with proportion, deconstruction, and juxtaposition to contrast the beautiful and grotesque' as documented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's 2017 exhibition dedicated to Kawakubo entitled 'The Art of the In-Between.' Despite offering a proliferation of diffusion lines and capsule collections, Comme des Garçons operates as a financially independent entity' bridging the gap between luxury and lifestyle.
