Description
A nice circa 1880s advertising clock made by the Sidney Advertising Clock Co. of Sidney New York. There were several case variations but all functioned the same. A Seth Thomas 8-day spring driven movement was mounted in a massive wall hung case that had a separate lower compartment which contained 3 vertical revolving cylinders with advertisements. Every 5 minutes a bell would ding and the cylinders revolved a quarter turn to display a different advertisement. The clock was patented by Andrew Strait in 1886. According to newspaper clippings on file with the Sidney Historical Association, the clock had a reasonably successful demand from innkeepers, restaurant owners, physician's offices and jewelers who sold advertising space on them. This clock winds, sets, and runs well. The advertising cylinders function as intended. The advertisements on the cylinders are most likely reproductions. The wood marquee is missing both sides. The center of the face has been repainted, probably blocking out an old advertisement. The cabinet and mechanism otherwise in VG condition. Measures 6’ tall, 28” wide, 11” deep.
